Check out this review of the original PennyStocking DVD package:

As I’m sure you know, this is Tim Sykes’ first instructional set of DVDs on how to trade penny stocks. Each of the four DVDs is about one hour and twenty minutes long, so the entire set consists of six hours worth of information and instruction.

Disc One contains a lot of basic information that is very useful for trading newbies. Chapter topics include an introduction to Tim, investment types, basic stock market terms (great for rookie traders), stock classifications, penny stock basics, and chart types and patterns. This disc is a great introduction for those why may not have had any exposure to trading or investing because it starts from scratch and assumes the viewer knows nothing.

Disc Two is a good one. On this DVD Tim reviews five different chart types; Messy, Supernova, Stair Stepper, The Snore & The Crow. (The Crow is pretty humorous.) While displaying many examples of these different chart patterns, Tim explains price action and, more importantly, the methods he’s used to make trading decisions in the past. Each chart Tim displays and discusses is analyzed in a way that will help you learn what to look for when you begin your own watch list. Particularly interesting and useful is the way Tim offers the reasons for certain patterns and how to diagnose and take advantage of them.

Disc Three contains some Tim Sykes history. The viewer will learn how Tim got started and how—through luck and skill—he turned $12k into $800k in just a few years. He also reviews market behavior and history from 2000-2003 and shares with us some of the big wins (and losses) he incurred with specific stocks; when he bought and sold, when he shorted, even when he made big mistakes. The real-world examples on this DVD are very interesting, and Tim’s humor and easy-going manner make it more enjoyable than you’d expect.

Disc Four is similar to number three, covering Tim’s experiences from 2004-2006. The difference, however, is that the final two chapters highlight important lessons that he has learned throughout his trading careers. IMO this is the most important info on this DVD.

My criticism of this set consists of just a couple things. First, it’s pretty obvious that this was Tim’s first attempt to create an instructional DVD package. The production value is nothing special and there are moments that look completely unrehearsed. (On the other hand, Tim’s humor and spontaneity is what prevents a topic like this from being stuffy.) Second, many of the chart reviews on the first two discs have a 20/20 hindsight feel about them. IOW, it’s easy to look at a 12-month chart and say ‘this is where you should’ve bought on the breakout” or “enter the breakdown here…” Duh! I could look at charts from 2008 and do that! Which is why Disc Three, with his real-life buys/sells and shorts/covers noted on the charts–with accompanying explanation—provided me with a lot more educational information.

To Sum It All Up:

I personally think Tim’s DVDs are a bit overpriced, but then again it’s difficult to argue the fact that it can be paid for with 1-2 trades following his strategy. (It happened for me.)

What I like about Tim’s presentation is that he doesn’t use Wall Street jargon or come across as pretentious in any way. His down-to-earth manner and unassuming approach makes it easy to follow what he’s presenting, and his humor keeps things light. Very refreshing, considering the topic.

Overall, this is a very good package for the beginning penny stocker. These DVD’s give the viewers a solid foundation and Tim goes to great lengths to stress the importance of continued education. So if you’re considering trading penny stocks and want some good beginner’s information this set of DVDs will definitely help you get started.
