Why These 6 Alternative Energy Stocks Are Like Strung-Out Junkies

Posted by timothysykes on Mon 23rd of Jun, 2008 02:08:39 PM

Whenever a sector has big winners, cheap, poor and greedy people are gonna look to get in on the action by buying and hyping bottom-of-the-barrel-companies that trade for less than $5/share. It’s science.

Take alternative energy—the rise of superstars like First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) and Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ENER) have paved the way for runups in industry laughingstocks Capstone Turbine Corporation (CPST) and SatCon Technology Corporation (SATC), Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies (QTWW) and Hydrogenics Corporation (USA) (HYGS). Worse yet, no matter the rising tide theory, the sector’s true embarrassments, Plug Power Inc. (PLUG) and Beacon Power Corp. (BCON), still can’t even rise much! (laughing at them truly does make you feel better about yourself, try it!)

This kind of gutter trash is my specialty—I’m not even gonna get into the fundamentals—or lack thereof—cuz no matter how bright a future these companies say they have, fancy accounting they use to prop up their numbers, etc. you really gotta think of them as junkies shooting up heroin (or alternative energy) in an alleyway. Message board posters, longs, naïve fund managers (themselves drug addicts…seriously, you have no idea how bad it is, pathetic that nobody talks about it openly) and ANALysts propping up their near-carcasses, feeding them one good meal and dressing them up to go to a big charity event to make themselves look good, only to ditch them later after they’ve gotten credit for doing a good deed (profiting form hyped up prices).

Overly cynical? Nope. 900 out 1,000 of these manure-esque companies will fail within a few years, 950 will fall back waaay below these spiked up prices and 990 of them will trade lower than what they’re at right now. These are just estimates based on industry fact and my decade-long experience and if you think you have the talent to profit from that 0.10% of successful companies, go right ahead.

On the other hand, all you odds-loving, drug-despising people, my bros, my students, my comrades in profit, join me in stalking their charts, patiently waiting to profit from their near-inevitable fall from grace, back to junkie stock prices, that being under $1 and $2.

In order of least disease-ridden junkie to Amy Winehouse:

  11. HYHY looks like a great short right here, volume dried up end of the day, the mid day BS $27mill LOI did nothing for it. Going to drop like a rock soon. Anyone else short?

  12. Thanks guys…it was a good one. I ended up getting some more of QMNM at .047. I watched it climb to .o725 at market close praying that it would continue upward or at least hold until tomorrow at open. Tim is right about this SEC pattern day rule. I hope it doesnt cost me because of it.

i’m sitting here eating my boston market take out, wishing i hadn’t given up on pdo at 3 o’clock when it was trying to break through 35. I dipped for an hour and missed the critical juncture!

  23. 23

    Balls…that’s pretty damn crazy!

  24. I was able to get into QMNM today at .0375 and rode the wave up. I got out in less than an at .0525, which was a little too early. I guess Tim’s itchy trigger finger is rubbing off on me.

QMNM is a supernova of beauty.

Anyone else use TOSmobile.com on their cell phone?
I used it today at work to sell my NCOC held from friday.
I did it during our annual wage review group-meeting! We all got an across the board cost of living raise of 2%…good thing I found another way to give myself a raise!

  26. DAMN NICE play for those who got in on QMNM…. Congrats..

I so need one of those play..

  27. new post about affiliates that ALL of u profitable pennystockers should read:

  28. Tim, I’m pretty with you on the whole runup thing on these stocks but I have to disagree on the CPST story. I’ve been researching this company high and low and have to conclude this is a comeback story. Given the backlog, demand for product, price of energy, and partnerships with distributers and UTX its hard to believe this thing is going to fall from the sky. I would agree if this was a two week runup but this thing has been going since Nov. of last year. I’d like you to take look at it a little closer if possible and let meknow what you think. Try not to judge to quickly on this one.

    peace

    Brandon

  29. brandon, NONE OF THESE FUCKEN STOCKS ARE REAL COMPANIES…THEY COULD SELL EVER LASTING LIFE AND THEY’D STILL FUCK UP CUZ THEY ALL HAVE SKELETONS IN THEIR CLOSETS. WHY DO YOU THINK THERE ARE SO MANY SELLERS EVERYWHERE?

whats it gonna take to get through to you people? do we really have to wait 3-5 years for it to sink in that the industry, the products, none of that crap matters to sub $5 stocks cuz there’s always something wrong with them…if there wasnt, they wouldnt be penny stocks. u think u have some skill at researching, u dont. u think u have some edge, u don’t. there is a reason why the entire financial world looks down on penny stocks, there are no diamonds in the rough, theree only the perception of diamonds.

i will NEVER waste my precious time giving ANY of these companies a chance because 999 out of 1,000 times i will be right. thats good enough for me

  30. Brandon,
Believe in your own due diligence. The chart is telling you the whole story on this one.

  31. yes, trust the chart, trust the fact that its a total piece of crap chart…not saying it wont go higher but the chances of sustained higher prices is comparable to somebody with a $2k account turning it into $500k this year…without my DVD’s help!

  32. Gotcha! Thanks for the feedback and I get you. The ultimate goal is to make money, regardless of how you get there. Thanks!

    Brandon

  33. I’m waiting for SINO to breakdown belw $10!

Do you guys think it will?

    ME Tony ME
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    And to Balls,
just my opinion, but NCOC is a longer term hold, have had that since 6.no signs of letting up yet,it’s hot coal!

  35. Sykes: you are up 60% over the last few months If I could make the raspberry sound I would. I invested in Jan. 08 in CPST and I am now up 200 ish %, and you sit there and tell people that this stock is a train wreck waiting for a place to happen. Yes You are an Idiot. You have NOT DONE your DD on this stock and you are giving investors who could be making money a BUM STEER. As I said previously AMF.

  36. yes 60% while making mistakes and keeping my risk low and teaching others to do the same…if u’re up 200% with all your money in CPST, your risk is not low at all…it takes more than stock picking kid, its about process. my process ignores all the kool-aid hype that u’re drinking, i hope u know when to take a profit

Hey, Tony & Mike13th, I’m in PDO too. Was a bit slow grabbing it when it got past $35…my fill price was $36.49. Nice to see it close close to $38 though.

Let’s hope for a gap-up and a brief peak over $40 tomorrow, where I’ll sell. Well, either way I’m selling tomorrow.

And Mike, thanks for the heads-up this morning on LMRA when it broke $1. Made a nice little profit this morning (although I left money on the table!).

P.S. Got a blog/diary of my trades going at welcometothegutter.blogspot.com

  38. Yng,
Look at EMIS for short on red,URRE too.
and a bank up today ?
on fluff news crap, yup AWBC,shorted at close, couldn’t hold $2 buh buh imo tomorrow

  39. 39
    YngvaiMalmsteve -

Thanks for the heads up, Mike. I’ll add those to my short list.

  40. Any good longs listed for tomr? And any opinions on QMNM?

  41. 41
    YngvaiMalmsteve -

    Smoke,

QNMN is a crazy crazy stock. Way too risky for me to jump in long at this point…although that’s what I thought earlier today only to see it jump from 2 cents to 7 cents! And TOS doesn’t let you short these.

I’m currently long PDO and WWEI.

I’m considering taking a very small position in BIHC tomorrow, but we’ll see. GSPG is another small penny that I’m watching for a breakout.

GTXO is another potential breakout watch. Also keeping an eye on ENT for any breakout moves.

  42. Smoke.
fwiw, the same news that moved AWBC up moved STSA down,
this is such a game, you see?

I got long STSA long right off even $4 eod.
STSA should move off that $4 imo. long

  43. Yng, Where and wat scans did u do to find those stocks? I did a few scans and didnt catch these…

Mike, Thanks for the info. Wat does fwiw mean?

  44. 44
    YngvaiMalmsteve -

    Smoke,

I find the stocks in a lot of ways. Either through my stockfetcher scans that I made for myself, or through stocks that various people mention…Tim, Mike13th, Investorslive, Cameron Faus (at TheTechnicalTrader.net), The Market Kid, Superman, or others that people might mention in the chatrooms.

If you’re interested in any of my stockfetcher scans, let me know and I can give you the code (if you are subscribed to stockfetcher).

Then, in TOS, I create watchlists, each with a different name. I have one called “Breakout”, which are stocks that look ready to breakout. I have one called “Long”, which are stocks that might be good to go long on (and which often overlaps with Breakout). I have one called “Short” for potential shorts. I have one called “Prehits” for any prehits mentioned in Mike’s chatroom. I try to keep the number of tickers on these to a minimum, maybe 4-5 max per watchlist, so that I don’t have too many stocks to watch at once. If you have too many to watch at once, it can be easy to miss moves. Some of those potential breakouts I mentioned to you are on my “Breakout” list. I usually have my watchlists set up either the night before or the morning before the market opens.

this blog is incredibly stupid hydrogenics makes fuel cells and
hydrogen fueling stations, it certainly is riding ener coatails
cause its only gone up in the past 5 days!!!!!!ener does not i repeat does not make fuel cells

  46. jimmy, hurt me hurt me…lol…did i say they’re in the same biz as ENER? no, learn to read buddy, i promise its not as hard as it looks

  47. Your problem with Capstone (CPST) is that you can not understand their technology and where the global economy is going! China + India needs energy, oil prices increase every day and the whole world needs ENERGY EFFICIENCY. CPST plays in many different sectors (residential CCHP, hybrid buses, vehicles, biogas etc). I’m 400% and this is only the start. Capstone is going to be the next Microsoft. Only the patents of CPST makes a $20 stock.

  48. Grk technology=kool aid…it could go to 20 thats fine, but that would be on hype and them being in a hot sector. the company itself is a junkie
