Maybe you’re a successful solo-entrepreneur (what I like to call a “Lone Wolf Entrepreneur”), writer, stock trader, or even a golfer. You’ve made it big by going your own way and running a one-man empire that has given you and your family the ultimate freedom.
There’s only one problem… It can sometimes seem lonely running a lone wolf operation like this, no matter how much success you have.
I don’t mean “lonely” in the sense that you don’t interact with other people or that you rarely step out of the Citizen Kane-type mansion you live in. I mean that it can sometimes feel like you’re on a desert island without anyone else who understands exactly what you’re going through.
EVERY single decision rests on your shoulders. While your best friend Mike can always blame the guy in the next cubicle over for some mistake his department made, you don’t have that luxury.
While your neighbor Jimmy can brag about all the vacation time he’s racked up and how he’s looking forward to spending a month at the lake without a care in the world, you know that your income is entirely dependent on the decisions you make and at any given time, you may have to drop what you’re doing to fix some problem.
So how do you overcome the lone wolf blues?
Easy, remind yourself that you wouldn’t want it any other way.
Sure, every decision falls on your shoulders, but isn’t that better than being blamed by a boss for a mistake that you didn’t make? Isn’t that better than knowing that your future success is dependent on the competence of your closest co-workers?
Sure, you’ll never have a month-long vacation where you sit mindlessly on the beach without ever checking in with your business, answering an email, making a phone call, researching a trade, or thinking about your next novel. But, what would you be doing with your time if you WERE on a month-long vacation of doing nothing at all? If you’re anything like me, you’d last a whole day and a half before you started brainstorming a new product idea, thinking about a new story idea for a screenplay, or wondering about a tweak that might make a million-dollar difference in your trading system.
Another solution to the lone wolf blues is to make a few friends who DO know what it is you’re going through. I keep in touch with a childhood friend of mine who now runs an online business from home just like me and we try to chat once every few weeks about the issues we face. Every time I get off the phone with him, I feel a little better knowing that I’m not the only person within a three-state-radius crazy enough to buck the corporate world and run a business all by myself.
If you don’t personally know anyone who lives this lone wolf lifestyle, hang out on blogs or forums like this one. Read a book or two by solo-entrepreneurs or traders. You’ll instantly feel better knowing that contrary to what it sometimes seems like, there ARE a lot of other people who run this type of operation.
The freedom and cash flow that comes from these types of lone wolf ventures is truly unmatched. But, it does come with a price. There are times when you will miss the camaraderie that comes with a more typical work environment or the security that comes from knowing that if you’re not at work for awhile, someone else will clean up any messes.
But isn’t such a price worth the reward? To me, there’s no question about it.
