Best Stock Broker For Short Selling: Which Two Do I Use & Recommend?

Watch these 7 free video lessons on how I became a millionaire

This is the single most frequently asked question I get so, every 2-3 weeks I think I’ll have to repeat it (it takes a while for information to sink into traders/investors…you have to treat them like little kids because market experience and cynicism-wise, little kids is exactly what 99% of these people are)

Thinkorswim is the single best broker I have ever used, great executions, customer service and I’ve extremely proud to use, recommend and be an affiliate with them (so if you open an account with them, let them know who sent ya!) Their minimum is $3,500 and they’re very good at finding me shares of-hard-to-borrow stocks.

Interactive Brokers is another broker I use, they have the best borrows on the stocks I like to trade (learn how to find the stocks I trade each day HERE)

Sogotrade, SpeedTrader, TradeKing and Goldman Sachs (GSCO has tons of IBs or introducing brokers so you open an account with them and get access to GSCO’s list of stocks to short….if you don’t know what GSCO is don’t talk to or email me because I don’t have the patience to deal with such basics, watch 36 hours of instructional content I’ve been nice enough to create for you people…yah, I don’t have to be nice, nor should I be, if you wanna be a trader get used to dealing with the worst/most soulless people in the world, my “tough love” act is a nice preparation) are 3 other great sources for short sellers.

Scottrade and Etrade might have the biggest marketing budgets (that’s why sooo many of you have accounts with them), but they should’ve invested in building better platforms for short sellers, as they are, they suck for short selling so stop wasting my time when you mention them and say “Scottrade says you can’t short stocks under $5″…of course you can, Scotrade just sucks at short selling so they need to make excuses for their suckiness.

If you have any kind of problem with the negativity I display in this post, stop reading my website, don’t even think about short selling, don’t even think about learning how to short sell, just go about your blissfully ignorant bullish ways and allow us to plunder your acocunts when reality sets in, gratzie!

Hey Tim, What about Canada? Are there any good short selling brokers in Canada? What About Questrade?

I’ll save Tim some time and tell Eric that Questrade Canada SUCKS for Short Selling. Worse than E-trade!

You’ll have to open an account with Thinkorswim Canada.

Does anyone use speedtrader? Sogotrade costs 120/month just to use the live platform rather than use their web-based platform. Interactive has annual fees and other misc fees. Speedtrader will be my next broker if TD Ameritrade messes up TOS. Tim what are your thoughts on speedtrader exclusively?

TD Ameritrade messes up TOS? How? Acquisition doesn’t mean you don’t get shares to short anymore.

    Hey Tim,

I tried TOS’s demo account, but it usually shows an alert that I cant short the particular hard-to-borrow stock (and to call helpdesk to make them find some for me).

“and they’re very good at finding me shares of-hard-to-borrow stocks”

Does it mean that you have to call helpdesk almost every time before shorting
    one of these stocks?

    Thanks!

Found the answer right after I posted the question :)
Why borrowing isnt fully automated, if an operator can do it? Does it make sense?

I hear sogotrade has the biggest access to OTCBB. E-trade has free streaming quotes. I use E-trade for bigger stocks and sogotrade for shortselling and hard to get short positions. Interactive brokers is good too I hear but you have to have I think 10,000$ to start.

Can ChoiceTrade short sell penny stocks?

  • patrick

TOS Canada sucks for shorting…I was just on their site…no shorting of under $3.00 and no shorting of OTC…that’s pathetic! Stinking gov’t regulators…basically useless I would think if you want to short via Tim’s method.

  • Pennistoks

Penson, the clearing firm of TOS, Ameritrade and SpeedTrader just sucks! They haven’t gotten any good shorts for a while. Well, fortunately I got an account with IB and Sogo…
