Because I owe a ton of traffic to him as he’s my SEO guy!
I give you James St. John:
1. What’s your background?
I’ve been doing Internet marketing for companies for eleven years now. When I first started promoting websites, it was a different world altogether; Google didn’t exist and Yahoo was the leading search engine. Over the past 11 years I have worked for a communications company, increasing their annual revenues from $600,000 to over $4 million dollars. Since then I have started my own Internet Marketing Company and have worked with several Fortune 500 companies, as well as small to medium sized companies. Most recently I have partnered up with former NFL player Tony Mandarich, creating Mandarich LLC. www.Mandarich.com
2. What made you get into SEO & Internet Marketing work?
I started by creating a simple website for a friend. After the website had been online for a few weeks I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t getting visitors, so I started doing research. Before I knew it, I had figured out a way to repeatedly and constantly beat the competition. As a competitive guy I have always looked for challenging projects that most people think are impossible.
3. What is Internet Marketing & SEO in a nutshell?
Internet Marketing is the promotion of a website, products, or services online and encompasses all aspects of marketing via the Internet. Making your website compliant with search engines is SEO in a nutshell; there are several little tricks that can be done to increase your positions even further. Over the years we have found countless so-called SEO companies that use unethical tricks to get a website ranked higher in search engines; ultimately this type of practice can get a website permanently banned from major search engines like Google.
4. What changes have you made on my sites?
We went through almost every page on each of your websites and cleaned Meta Title and Descriptions (that’s the part that shows in search engines when you do a search query), making the Title and Description Tags even more relevant to the page, and at the same time increasing the density of keyword phrases in both the Meta Tags and the page content. By doing this, we were able to increase the quantity of phrases that your sites rank for. We also re-arranged and created additional links inside the website to make it easier for people and search engines to navigate to the most popular pages on the site. However, the most important thing we did by far (and are still doing) is “link building”; this is where we find other relevant websites and have them link to your website. Not only does this increase visitors to the websites, but it also makes your website more popular in the eyes of the major search engines.
5. What are some common mistakes bloggers make?
The most common mistake that I see is when bloggers and website owners put more focus on trying to trick search engines so they can rank high instead of putting the focus on good content. If you have a website filled with original, quality content it will be a lot easier to get higher rankings. The other major factor is networking; if you want to have a successful blog you need to socialize and network with other websites who are interested in the same topic. Another common mistake that I see is when people slam a website with ads and put the focus on the ads instead of the content; if you give the focus to great content people are more likely to view more of your pages and ultimately click on more ads.
6. Where do you see the internet heading?
Definitely Mobile, and more decentralized. I think before long we will all be using computers and phones by logging into an online account that has all of our files on it, instead of saving it to a home computer. We can already do this now, but I think with time it’s going to be even more secure and easier to use. Also with Internet Marketing I see the future becoming more behavior-based than ever before; what I mean by this is that search engines and websites are learning to understand how you think and then deliver personalized results.
