Why Failed Blogger Dan Lyons Exemplifies Financial Narrow-Mindedness & Failed Traders

Posted by Timothy Sykes on Fri 13th of Feb, 2009 08:25:04 AM

That’s the title that popped into my head when I read THIS Newsweek article of his.

Like failed blogger Michael Arrington, who is taking a break because he’s a little bitch, Dan Lyons who gained “fame”/book deal/job at Newsweek by writing his witty Fake Steve Jobs blog, blames blogging for his personal shortcomings saying this:

I learned the hard way: while blogs can do many wonderful things, making huge amounts of money isn’t one of them.

C’mn Dan, you’re smart than that!

He whines:

For two years I was obsessed with trying to turn a blog into a business. I posted 10 or 20 items a day to my site, The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs, rarely taking a break. I blogged from cabs, using my BlackBerry. I blogged in the middle of the night, having awakened with an idea. I rationalized this insane behavior by telling myself that at the end of this rainbow I would find a huge pot of gold. But reality kept interfering with this fantasy. My first epiphany occurred in August 2007, when The New York Times ran a story revealing my identity, which until then I’d kept secret. On that day more than 500,000 people hit my site—by far the biggest day I’d ever had—and through Google’s AdSense program I earned about a hundred bucks. Over the course of that entire month, in which my site was visited by 1.5 million people, I earned a whopping total of $1,039.81. Soon after this I struck an advertising deal that paid better wages. But I never made enough to quit my day job. Eventually I shut down—not for financial reasons, but because Steve Jobs appeared to be in poor health. I walked away feeling burned out and weighing 20 pounds more than when I started. I also came away with a sneaking suspicion that while blogs can do many wonderful things, generating huge amounts of money isn’t one of them.

Dan, you financial dimwit, you shouldn’t be writing for Newsweek, you should be writing for FAIL Magazine. For all your hard work, you didn’t take a few days to ever try new ad networks, affiliate programs or think about creating some product–like a book or becoming a blog consultant–how is that possible, what kind of blogger are you? Oh that’s right, a FAILED ONE.

Guy, go read my blog post detailing how I made $83,000 in December–and basically $50,000 ever other month–on only 3,000 daily readers. And no, it wasn’t easy, I’ve tried a ton of different stuff, all the stuff you should’ve been trying had you been the slightest bit flexible.

I won’t even quote the rest of the whiny article that is filled with the most desperate kind of fact twisting; it all just makes me wonder how can some people be so narrow-minded?

And yet, it’s great that Danny boy is the way he is because he becomes a great example of how some people can’t seem to experiment or adapt, or really even think outside the box.

This relates directly to PennyStocking because there are so many Lyon-like feeble-minded investors out there, people who believe penny stocks move randomly, people who believe in penny stocks, all sorts of dumb-as-Vick-type people who just refuse to suspend their assumptions and daily routine and try different strategies in pursuit of success!

So, to all you whine-because-you-refuse-to-try-new-strategies, God forbid any strategy, stock trading or blogging, that has tons of testimonials and a track record, GTFU! (grow)

    From Dave Winer:
"Blogs don't make money. But people with blogs can. "

    http://www.scripting.com/stories/2009/02/11/how...

You might notice Dave does not have one piece of advertising on his site and he explains why.

Where the ads on this site actual make it better. It is one of the reasons I visit, for the products/services/information and posts like this one.

If Tim stopped posting and just focused on Alerts and DVD's this site would probably be dead in a year or two.
  • u discover blogging grammar doesnt mean shit, blogging teaches u all sorts of wonderful things and if u're willing to learn, blogging teaches u to bank $ too. dan wasnt willing to learn and now hes bitter that he's just like every other poor journalist in the world, these guys move from one story to another, never really understanding what theyre missing
  • "C’mn Dan, you’re smart than that!" -> Grammar trainwreck.

You're right though. If you've got a blog with over 3k daily visits, there's no reason you can't derive a decent living out of it. People either aren't willing to hustle or want to preserve the integrity of their site (which is just an excuse for them to not hustle).
