TIM June Monthly Review: It’s Satisfying To Earn 14% When Most Others Lose

Watch these 7 free video lessons on how I became a millionaire

June was a tremendous month for me, my site and my strategy all took off just as others collapsed. Of course, just as all the longs look like geniuses in bull markets so do short sellers in bear markets and my trading/teaching was far from perfect, but the key is we’re all earning and learning…

To the numbers…

My Thinkorswim account increased from $17,807 to $20,272, a gain of $2,465, or 13.84%. Plenty of mistakes (click blog posts on the table below to see), but nice domination of Covestor (see rankings HERE) and the major indexes:

Site traffic continued its strong growth, especially monthly visitors which increased from May’s 104,000 to 150,000!

And get excited cuz now I’ve figured out a way to insert the TIMtrades table itself!

Date Stock Buy Sell Net
June 2 NTI $13.76 $13.70 $50
June 4 GRO $6.91 $7.37 $230
June 4 PTEK $4.90 $5.15 $135
June 5 PTEK $5.14 $5.40 $470
June 9 PTEK $4.74 $4.69 $53
June 11 STXX $4.22 $4.00 $250
June 12 STXX $4.99 $5.34 $659
June 18 HYHY $2.26 $2.38 $262
June 18 TGC $1.69 $1.78 $250
June 18 HYHY $2.28 $2.31 $40
June 20 PINN $3.31 $3.44 $175
June 24 URRE $3.90 $4.05 $205
June 25 URRE $4.39 $4.40 $2
June 30 CNEH $4.60 $4.88 $393
Total $2465

Good call on chdx and tgc timmay, rode chdx from $15.90 now sitting at 15.18, only 100 shares, but not bad for a monday morning, tgc rode 400 shares down 16 cents, still open.

On other note, MYEC is fading again around $2.70, still short 400 shares sold at 3.60 like 3 weeks ago, tried to reshort last week spike each and every day several times with no luck.
    Thats life.

No my Timalerts fee has paid paid off several times over.

Congrats on your return to date.

I know it serves to boost your already huge ego :-) but that is the only purpose I can see.

UVSE looks like a fakeout to me, usually when I breakout is for good, old resistance becomes support, it barely touched 0.35 and went back, it had its chance and it didn’t take it. Also, volume is not that great.

SPent last night reading “the art of contrary thinking” great read tim, really self assuring how stuff has been pumped up and dumped for centuries really amazing. Will finish it between today and tomorrow so I can sit down and study “technical analysis using multiple time frames” once it arrives Wednesday or Thursday. For that one I am buying a notebook, and may even consider sharpening a couple of pencils, got to nail this stuff.

Hey, Kris, funny thing is, I saw RDN spike up this morning based on their press release about managerial replacements, and I tried to short it in my TDA account at $1.46 but it told me twice that I didn’t have enough funds to cover it, and I wasn’t even using all my cash, just 75% of it. Like you, though, I did see that as a good sign, as it never went down to the level I intended to cover at, though it may very well do so tomorrow, but I really needed to use my last day trade from last week, so I could start on a fresh three tomorrow.

Hi Oracle, TDA has a margin on stocks under $5 bucks. The margin is 2.50. So, if u shorted RDN at 1.45, you have to add 2.50 to the share price for the margin requirement. Now it is like shorting a 3.95 stock. check your buying power now. did that explain what happened……

It was strange they kept canceling my order. if it was buying power they will let u know. they gave me no reason for the cancellation.

  • JeffMoates

Kris and Oracle, you both got your shorts cancelled because TDA does not have any shares available of that specific security to short. Each brokerage has to borrow these shares that we all short from institutional investors, if the stock is an OTC, on the suspect list, or just highly sought after for shorting, you will not find any shares available. Also, if there is a stock you really know is going to plummet, get up early. Reserve the shares by shorting at a much higher price than the actual B&A. That way it won’t get filled until you change it. It takes up a lot of BP, but it’s worth it if it’s a good trade.

You were absolutely right, Kris. It allowed me to go in with about half my available cash (did a test short and canceled). My buying power on that low a stock proved to be the problem. Can’t wait to get up to $25,000. All these rules truly suck!

THat strategy doesn’t work at AMeritrade as they cancel your order when you make a change to it and put in a new one, so you lose the shares you had reserved.

TDA does not cancel your reserved shares only the price you change, tried many times and it works as long as you reserved earlier in the morning. The best time to reserve is little bit after the pm open.

    Ryan, BTB, or Jeff,

Quick question about resrving of shares using this method…Say I want to short 100 shares of XYZ at $5.00, I can place a short sell limit order at $6.00 and that will reserve the 100 shares for me? Then I can go in and adjust my limit price afterwards?

I use Zecco. I know that I can’t call Zecco and reserve shares and I’m wondering if this procedure you guys are talking about will work for me.

    Thanks

Wes, yes that is the exact way I do. Let say XYZ is trading at $5, and if I think it is short worthy at $4.90, I reserve 100 or as many as I want to (depending on my bp and shares availability) XYZ short at let say $6 (just to protect myself if there is an unexpected spike). Then I can change the price after I see the position is open on my trade activity box of TDA or even with Zecco, you can do the exact same procedure excpet Zecco does not allow you to trade pm or ah trades.

Wes, that should work with any brokerage. What Tim calls “reserving” shares is only available through ToS. The way we do it, it’s an actual short limit order, but it won’t fill until the price reaches it, or you change it when the time is right (the whites of their eyes…).

Kris, there should be some sort of a red ! symbol next to the cancelled order on your ‘order status’ page. If you click it, it will drop down the reasoning for why it was cancelled. I know that when it is OTCBB it usually just displays it at the top, but when there are no shares available, you have to click that red ! to find out why. If there are no shares to short it will read “Order Canceled: We’re sorry, but this stock is not available to sell short.”

BTB, no, as long as you edit your order right there on the order status page, it won’t release the shares you’ve ‘reserved.’ If you checkmarked the box and clicked cancelled, then attempted to do a completely new order, then I would understand if that happened.

TIM, WHERE’S THE MEMBERS SITE?! I’ve only been on here 2 months and these people think I’m an expert or somethin?!
