I am the Forrest Gump of Finance

Posted by Timothy Sykes on Fri 7th of Dec, 2007 02:54:36 PM

TIM $14,336 (up $188 on the week)

Glad That My EQUITIES Magazine Keynote Speech Was A Hit…Oh Yeah, Shouldn’t I Have Been Trading? (No positions)

At last night’s delicious pre-event dinner (free food tastes better); I discovered that being the keynote speaker of an EQUITIES Magazine event was kind of a big deal. Really. People knew me.

I was very important. Maybe it was because after my speech, I would be elevated to the same ranks as the
keynote speakers from their last event: billionaire Ken Fisher (Forbes columnist, manages $45 billion (truly) and inventor the small-cap value strategy!), Robert Greifeld (President and CEO of NASDAQ) and Thomas Donohue (President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce).

Yup, click that link, those industry big wigs really were in the same spot I was today—I told you this was a big deal! The only question is how in the world is this happening to me at this stage in my career? As I thought about this before speaking to nearly 200 institutional and private investors, fund managers and finance-types, it hit me. I am the Forrest Gump Of Finance. It was then I felt as though I had to go peeeeeeee.

No, this isn’t some self-annointed title (ok, maybe it is, but I think I’ve earned it), I’m not retarded nor do I have a junkie girlfriend—but this industry is so desperate for somebody, anybody, not to be boring when they talk finance and not be on the take somehow that I seemingly have a bright future just talking honestly and teaching people about what I love. (It helps that talking about what I love will make other people money–probly even moreso than those industry big wigs because my strategy works much better with smaller accounts.) There’s somethin’ wrong with all these other market pundits, they’re old, ugly, bald, introverted, too narrow-minded, too busy, too rich, too accustomed to lying. There’s crazy pundits, pundits who are wrong too often, pundits who get paid to promote stocks, angry pundits, uptight pundits, pundits who get nervous on camera, pundits who can’t speak in front of crowds, smelly pundits. That…that’s about it.

Herein lies the beauty of the financial media game: practically anyone can get to the top—you don’t need to manage billions of dollars or head a multi-billion dollar company, you just need to be honest, coherent, relevant and entertaining. It helps if you have an interesting backstory (Forrest Gump pulled in $400 million for a reason), but I don’t think it’s required. Sure, those who can’t do, teach and talk, blah blah blah, but I’m getting more offers now to manage funds than I ever did when I was actually looking to raise capital (too bad now that’s the last thing on my mind). So, the talking head game does have its benefits.

But, as you’ll read in my book, I am Forrest Gumping my way through this journey and I have no idea how it’ll all end—I’m just loving every second of it. I’m particularly pleased that today’s crowd seemed to enjoy my speech as they mobbed me afterwards (pictures and possibly video to follow) and the 100 copies of my book that I brought disappeared within minutes (free books read better).

And yes, I shoulda woulda coulda skipped this event and focused on trading today, but welcome to my new reality—TIM is incredibly important to me, but so is getting TIM’s message out there. I have no doubt I’ll be forced again to choose between the two.

PS CPSL was a great overnight short (first down day after the runup, but not exactly pprfect), RCH should follow this same pattern on Monday, SOLF should follow the exact same pattern (first up day after a breakdown) in reverse by gapping higher Monday, I dunno, I’m exhausted, I’m really gonna take a nap now—I can’t afford to get sick, busy busy busy week ahead!

getshorty MACD helps you to determine the strength or weakness of price trends or as a contrarian indicator when it diverges from price. It applies to any chart I guess penystock or not...
  • ddopps
long again on another small position of coin - hope this sucker gaps up strong and craps out.
  • Getshorty
    eminis?
  • tamimkhan
yup getshorty i totally agree my entry could have been better i was eyeing long since 7.70 just couldnt pull the trigger unless eminis showed me strength
  • smkiller
You gotta appreciate Tims patience. Timing is everything
  • Getshorty
No clue how to read MACD, not got to that chapter yet, have heard it doesn't matter at all for penny stocks
  • smkiller
I can appreciate your patience Tim. I would rather get a good pick than hurry and get a loss.
  • Getshorty
    GO COIN !!!
  • jeepee2008
no sign its going to tank any moment soon look at MACD, Market depth.... what do you guys think. Like Tim I think I might break hit resistance at about $9-ish... then better have your finger on the trigger ;-)
  • jeepee2008
Went long on COIN this morning 1000 @ $6.75 sold after little over an hour at $7.75 a nice $1k in little over an hour, not bad for a thursday morning and it made up nicely for my PCYC $170 cock up earlier this week. Thanks Tim. Started trading on Aug 13th with $5K, profit to date :.... 34%!!!
  • Getshorty
That's it, long COIN at 8.23, intraday flip most probably, I respect too much this bitch now
  • Getshorty
LoCarb IB and TOS are both great, but there are soooo.... many people waiting to short COIN now.
  • Getshorty
That's what I did yesterday Tamimkhan (bought at7.24 and sold at 7.82)

May do it again today but will depend on the close, you'll like to check how strong is the close. Remeber how fast it fall from $14.

My take is you have a good idea but need to tune up your entry to improve your chances.
Also, I am going long COIN only a small stake, on the other hand, I have a bigger lot reserved in case this falls today (not likely, but we all know by now COIN is a moody bitch)
  • tamimkhan
long coin at 8 for the overnight pump
  • LoCarb
ORGN is up 20% over 3-4 days, has sense settled down, and might roll over. Does this look attractive to TIM?
  • kshelia
Yes, a bit of trouble, keeps freezing up
  • LoCarb
I did this morning. But I think I got tangled up in the multiple TIM sites.
  • anyone else having problems/logging in/posting? fucken servers
  • nojobmaui
I found some coin to short at scottrade today
  • LoCarb
Is IB a decent broker for locating available shares to short? Or is it a randon chance based on each brokers clientele? I noticed Tim mentioned in a post that GS/BAC were better than most but were for the big boys. Is it pay to play for access to these share loans?
  • no JVA too illiquid, not up enough
  • jordano44
Damn-too late to jump in COIN. Thanks to all for the help...
  • LoCarb
I noticed JVA has popped 20% this morning on an earnings (or lack of) report. Would this qualify as an interesting set for you Tim? Would you rather see multiple days up first? I am new to your site and trying to get a sense for your counterpunch style. Thanks LC
  • bobbymapp
Anyone see OBAMA.OB pumped on Letterman last night?
  • rassoodock
COIN seeing resistance at 8. Does it break through or bounce back? Guess I should buy the DVD, lol
  • rassoodock
COIN --> Pumpers trying to get price up so they can exercise convertible warrants at 8.25?? Does anybody know how those things work? According to the 10-Q, COIN cannot call the warrants until they get approval from the SEC. Apparently they were already fined for some shady financing practices.
  • jbarwick
i heard tim is coming out with 4 new sites does any1 know what there going to be about???
  • ddopps
longed coin yesterday - rode the dip - and got out of long at $7.75 (guess I should held longer o'well) still a nice little $371 profit
  • of course i post buy picks, but only when i see breakouts, u wont find many of those in this market, best hpe for buys is short squeezes like COIN
  • Getshorty
Come on guys, yesterday I got squeezed on Coin, but got out before major damage, then at the close went long small position at 7.24, sold at 7.82 a few mins ago, never stay short overnight a stock that finishes in the green and has made a new high.

Also tried to get shares for shorting in case it reverses in the afternoon, but couldn't get any neither IB nor TOS. Hope that mean short interest is huge and monster squeeze is coming (Remember, it was manipulated up to $ 14 a few months ago)

Paradox, If you have two accounts, I'll close my short by offsetting your short going long in your other account, that way when the time is right to short, you just sell your long position, that way you are assured you'll have the shares. But please, close your short.
  • yaktipper
Stats on APWR, which are not clear from any other source you may be looking at:

The float is approximately 13,900,000 shares or 41.1% of the total stock. (19 mil owned by insiders)

As of the end of August, 4,447,900 shares short.
  • AdamN
Damn COIN, look at that breakout....and not a damn share anywhere to reserve. Hope it keeps going higher!
  • Dan000
HA looking good for a short soon
  • YoungGunz
I can try to answer. When he sees potential break out patterns he will say something. Mostly he's looking for stocks that are up big in a short period of time to short. Some of those same stocks however can be great long plays before they're great short plays. He lets a lot of long play opportunities go while waiting for the stock to break down since he's better at getting in at the right time to short then he is at going long.
  • jordano44
    Tim-

Not much of a shorter, do you post BUY recommendations from time to time? Playing CEGE right now...first time newbie.
  • patelt78
Bought 500 shares of COIN at 7.12 after the morning selloff was over. Sold at 7.64 about 18 minutes later.
  • tbohen
Got bored waiting for a trade :)
    long 1000 COIN @ 7.10 sold at $7.50
  • nojobmaui

  • Ross
I will join you didn't see your post
  • TheParadox
ROSS, i already started one... lets see who wins the battle.
  • Ross
I am going to start the chatroom today since no one else has yet #pumptydumpty mozilla
  • TheParadox
yea, its gonna be #BUYSELLSHORTCOVER on moznet/mozilla.org

you can goto www.mibbit.com for a web based IRC client.

would like to hear peoples thoughts... the AM bid/ask is kinda wacky... but the newbie here might have caused it.... hey - never, EVER short/buy - whatever in the AH trading... you can get screwed if you not careful.
  • ddopps
I don't know what to do with coin either.. I went long yesterday. Not sure if I should bail right away or wait for the squeeze to happen??

    Are we chatting today?
  • TheParadox
Im at a losing position on COIN... I really am stuck at what i should do, take a loss or GTFO...

I think/feel like getting out and hoping to go long. anyone think different... I ask because COIN has been pissing me off and i feel i've become somewhat "emotional" about it... need some unbiased, good ol' fashion logic. My loss on COIN is $500. this mornings bid ask is lower than the previous close - which doesn't mean anything.

and the thought of the short squeeze this morning makes sense... hard to borrow is unavailable + breakout = mega squeeze....
  • nmeka
ohh and its on scottrade if you're interested
  • nmeka
I placed an order to short sell COIN at limit 7.30 . Didn't read the posts before. Newbie here..any advice whether I should hold on to the order or cancel it..now that I read the posts I'm confused ??
  • Ross
I agree Tim, trying to chase 50 cents is not very easy to do and my timing sucks. I am willing to wait for the right setup.

DTG was a nice play too bad it wasn't on my watch list.

I had shares of PCYC but followed your advice and stayed out because it didn't go up much. It dropped first thing in the morning and those that jumped in right away were able to grap 50 cent a share if they timed it perfect.
  • i just put all stocks i'm watching on m watchlist, some plays are over with lessons to be learned, some are just getting started...COIN was the only one i was really interested in today
  • YoungGunz
Also can you answer why you place stocks where if we didn't get them the day before we've basically missed out on the breakdown? PCYC and DTG for example both are down so much it doesn't seem like there is an edge anymore. Are you putting them out there still for possible reversals? What advantage are you hoping we get from those ones by adding them to our watchlist? I am not saying you shouldn't put them on there I am just asking because I feel I am either missing something that you're trying to show us or you're just putting them on the morning list to show what a good shortable pattern was and learn to find one like it next time. That and to get people to stop emailing you about why you didn't mention it or to get your opinion on it.
  • notesguy88
Good that nothing's really interesting today. I wouldn't be able to do any trading today anyway as I am involved in various 9/11 related activities in downtown Manhattan. I won't be in the proper mindset for trading today.
  • YoungGunz
Was COIN what you were considering your real thing or was that referencing action from yesterday with PCYC?
  • YoungGunz
COIN has been a stubburn bastard to trade anyways. Would be nice to see it at $10 to short. Won't be able to get as many shares as I normally get being that high. I am consider adding more money into my account to get larger positions and lower the effect from commisions.
  • good, its too early to really short COIN, none available means short squeeze more likely...tired of going for these friggin 50 cents/share gains, i want a $2/share one! COIN at $9 or $10 would allow tht to happen
  • Reaper
Fuck, no COIN (or COINW or COINZ) at TOS, IB, or Goldman. Genesis Securities (and thus SogoTrade) has some COIN, though.
  • Ross
    Yep no COIN @ TOS

I was wondering which stock was Tims #1 pick on this alert. I am assuming it was COIN
  • Dan000
Damn, no COIN to borrow from TOS =(
  • Mark
Just have to say that every few minutes now. It's good for the soul.
  • Mark
    Sarah! Sarah! Sarah!
  • acerockolla
Yeah and even better for us in Hawaii. Alerts come around 7:30pm, reserve shares at 1am, and wake up at 3:30am for market open. It's grreeeattt. All the more reason to move.
  • be-the-ball
    tim,

on a positive note, I love that you are posting your watchlist the night before. A huge help to those of us on the west coast!

    thx amigo
  • be-the-ball
    tim,

having trouble deciphering which of the 5 above is the truly interesting play for tomorrow?

COIN seems most interesting but doesn't look ready for tomorrow?
  • be-the-ball
You really dropped the ball on missing DTG.

I am in Korea traveling so not trading, so I missed it also.

Perhaps less meetings and more attention to those paying you for a lifetime of TimAlerts....

Just fucking with you Tim... ;-)
