TIM: Week 1 Review

Posted by Timothy Sykes on Fri 9th of Nov, 2007 01:54:18 PM

TIM $12,798 (flat on the day, up $383 on the week)

Well, this was a pretty boring week—the overall markets got decimated and I made a few hundred dollars. My sole position is 50,000 of Cygnus eTransactions (Other OTC: CYGT) as I’m expecting some big things from their debut of their new produ

ct at IAAPA next week. The rest of my portfolio is cash, just like it will be the vast majority of time. (Screw diversification—I’ll diversify when I’m dead!)

Sure, I know, I know, it’s a great market for short sellers and I should be embarrassed that I didn’t make more (realized gains amounted to only $160) money, but if you stick around, you’ll see it’s only the worthy opportunities that build fortunes and this week I didn’t see any. Betting that the Alibaba hype would wear off after its IPO, I correctly short sold Alibaba wannabe-Global Sources (Nasdaq: GSOL) at a near perfect price ($37.67), but was waaaaaaaay too quick to take profits (covering at $35.84, stock is now at $27.90) in a petty attempt to prove TIM was good at trading. Whoops! But I did warn you I was horrible at timing! That’s a big part of the reason I’m not a fund manager any more—oh yeah and my discipline problems, which I also showed off this week buy buying Vmware (NYSE: VMW) (a stock I had no business trading) and wiping away the gains from a nice little day trade in Evergreen Solar (Nasdaq: ESLR). And, just when the fun was beginning, my trading was hampered by the Pattern Day Trading Rule—definitely an interesting, if incredibly imbecilic, rule, but I guess you do have to protect the widows and orphans from day trading too much!

Today, the two stocks that interested me the most, Crocs (Nasdaq: CROX) and Stein Mart (Nasdaq: SMRT), CROX I was looking to buy for the bounce and SMRT I was looking to short into strength. Both finished up strongly (bullish signs), but there’s no way I’m risking being long over the weekend with this kind of market action. We’ve now had 2 consecutive days with a lot of afternoon dip buying and yet we finished down both days. What happens when the buying stops? Yeah–scary stuff.

Next week, I’ll be going back to my old home, beautiful Orlando, Florida for the IAAPA expo. My trading will be hampered, but who cares—I think the markets could continue to get crushed and trying to pick the bottom is a dangerous game. And, if IAAPA can give CYGT any meaning trading volume whatsoever, who cares about a few hundreds dollars in potential trading gains anyway. Maybe I’m just dreaming—it’s happened before.

Warning: TIM, Timothy Sykes, and the Easter Bunny have positions in CYGT.

Please note that due to factors including low market capitalization and/or insufficient public float, we consider some of these stocks to be small-cap stocks. You should be aware that such stocks are subject to more risk than stocks of larger companies, including greater volatility, lower liquidity and less publicly available information, and that postings such as this one can have an effect on their stock prices.

  • incorrect, my peeps dont cause selloffs, they profit from them...everyone was whining about USS tanking from $4.60 to $4.30 within 10 minutes of the alert, then it dropped another $2/share over 2 days
  • Retire@30
I can see Sykes hitting the send button on his alerts, slapping a mouse button with an evil grin, saying, "Go to work, Bitches!" as this 300+ army or short sellers is called into action to make money for each other slamming pumped microcaps. Ahhh, I love it. "Welcome to my biz model, bitches." indeed!!!

Regarding your affiliate program, do you send me a special link so I can paste to my site in order to get credits? I filled out your affiliate form just waiting for a confimraiton. No Rush just was wondering if I din't complete the form correctly or not.

P.S. Been reading alot of your Blog and getting a feel for the game. I like this unorthodox aproach to investing in penny stocks. Look forward to learning and participating. I am licking my wounds on USS and figure I am just going to hold on to see if I can reduce my losses.
  • cool, yeah i greatly appreciate u pimping out my link!
  • Ross
I used your link so you should get credit. I was going to put an affiliate link on one of my websites to promote you but still waiting confirmation from you. Every little bit adds up. Let me know I need to anything else to make sure you get credit.
  • u guys better tell TOS i sent u, i get a small affiliate commission for every person i send their way!
  • Ross
Hoping to have my TOS account opened soon. Just waiting for final approval so I can transfer funds. Look forward to getting the DVD. Not sure if I should go flat fee or per share commission. Per share seems like the way to go for a better chance to get in and out.
  • means the stocks will jump when i send out an alert so i better be bigtime right like i was on USS or else the members who enter late wont make a dime
  • milingz
tim...300 members...what implications does that have on the stocks you pick, if any? Will the picks change when you're +25k?

good work...you're making me money (junior in college) and helping me pay for a nice spring break. but i think ill get you dvd first, instead of just riding your coattails
  • Ross
Is USS going to tank? I am not sure if I should dump what I have and take the loss. I was an idiot yesterday going long.
  • whoops meant 7 on my watchlist, this is what happens with 3 hours sleep, too much work to do!
  • bestdeception
Well, looks like you guys nailed it. I've got to start waking up earlier to try and get some shares. Just curious Tim, how many timalert subs you have now? Curious how many people have already signed up and how many of us are "fighting" for short shares. Congrats to all those willing to hold overnight. Big payday.

after the morning panic i'm guessing it is going to just go for a lazy fade. its unpredictable though and could even spike and squeeze some shorts that got in today.
  • yaktipper
On the long side, GNLK from Tim's watchlist keeps trying to touch the 52 week high.
  • kelvin

Tim - thanks for the help in the email!
  • YoungGunz
I use think or swim. its a little intimidating at first but the more i use it the more i like it.
  • Buziness
yea scottrade sux just been to lazy to get out. young what do you use for your trades? I lost big yesterday when my stop loss order went off for 400 shares instead of 4000 at 4.59 like i thought i put in b4 i went to work. almost crapped my pants when i got home yeaterday.
  • YoungGunz
Definitely get out of scottrade if you're going to try and follow Timalerts.

You have to get away from the mainstream commercialized etrade, scottrade, tdameritrade, etc type brokers if you want to do longs and shorts.

I am keeping an eye on USS again today also...the rest seem like long shots for any trade today. I am probably just going to take the day off anyways. Can't just trade to trade you have to be patient and stick to your gunz.

I'mn not even going to call short selling a short sale anymore. I'm calling it a
    sykes sale.

"I just banked $300 yesterday when I syked USS!"

Shoot I'll even call a break out long a syke-out. "I rode the wave on XXX today when it broke resistance and syked-out."
  • Reaper
USS will skip the dividend and will continue to evaluate strategic alternatives. Not big news, but pre-market seems to like it

I'm looking for a gap down. Not looking like I'll get it. I'll probably then close some of my position on the open and then look to hold the rest for most of today and tomorrow.

    Not sure, tho.
  • Getshorty
Reaper, u looking for USS spikes to re-short or what?
  • scottrade aboslutely sux for shorting, i'll havea post soon, i use and recommnd thinkorswim
  • Buziness
hey Tim i am brand new to the site. I just have a question, I use scottrade and dont see how you can reserve short shares? do I need a different broker to do that? Cant wait to start making some money!! My performace chart looks like a friggin yo-yo but Ive been down lately...
  • Reaper
All but CNEX available at IB. I'm with Tim ... boooooooooring! I'm still playing around with USS anyway.
  • i didnt even bother borrowing, none of the setups are worth my time today
  • AdamN
Only MITI was available on TOS.

Tim, where you able to get SKNY, CNEX, or SCLN at all? I tried to reserve CNEX and SCLN earlier this morning and there were none.
