TIM $12,805 ( profit of $420 on the day)

Overall markets flat–a lot of bearishness in the morning turned into bullishness by the end of the day=boring. Potential plays from yesterday :

VDSI, WIND, NUAN, SCON, CRDC, CROX=boooooring, no worthy plays whatsoever, still watching all of them…LULU surprisingly put in little effort to bounce, look for further weakness and I’d like to buy under$40 (

hopefully we get some panicking, but I doubt I’ll be that lucky)…SYNA=very good late day strength, I’d love to buy it, but it’s pricey and my tiny account is hindered by the Pattern Day Trading Rules; only buy on a breakout of $61.72, preferably a gradual rise as a spike could indicate a double-top.

PennyStocking Plays

TNRO= boring, MXOM=up slightly (but not enough to make it worth TIM’s wHile), CCGY=failed breakout attempt, NNRI=spike and fade (would’ve been a good gap play), TWRT=spike and hold, should continue to be a good mover, wish I could short it!

CYGT showed some nice volume throughout the day, its .005 cent stock price gain means $250 in unrealized profits for TIM= nothing to get excited about, but more importantly, the bid rose from .06 to .08 meaning I can sell and breakeven (probly couldn’t sell my entire position though). Still a waiting game for the IAAPA conference next week…

The main plays today obviously dealt with the Alibaba IPO hangers-on=BIDU, GSOL and SOHU. Since I look to play the most volatile stocks, GSOL’s multi-point gap-up (compared to fractional gains for the others) made their stock my prime target.

I went in with the thesis that this stock had runup over the past few months all on Alibaba hype, hype that is now over. Sure, they have a decent little business, but the stock is rather expensive with a forward PE in the 40 range, while only growing at 20%/year. Sure, Alibaba has a ton of cash and might buy them out, but not this week and definitely not today. And, out of these 3 stocks, GSOL is, by far, the weakest performer so the opening price strength looked like an early Chanukah gift for me! TIM Lesson: I’ve shorted thousands of lesser quality companies like this nd I know that hype can help them perform better than quality companies so short selling into that hype is surprsingly more dangerous.

Since TIM is so tiny and GSOL relatively a pricey stock, I knew I couldn’t short more than 100 shares so I bided my time at the market open and waited. But, my usual impatience got the best of me and I entered in my short sell order at $36.67, afraid I was going to miss the bear party. Luckily, this stock was hard-to-borrow at Thinkorswim and my order was rejected. I immediately started chatting with their live help and discovered I had to contact them before trying to short sell hard-to-borrows. By the time I put my new order in, the price had risen $1/share and I wanted in ASAP.

I sold my shares short at $37.67 and cringed as I watch the price spike another $1 higher within a few minutes. Idiot. I felt relief that my position was so small as who knew how much higher the stock could go (it was up $4 now on the day). But I wasn’t very worried because BIDU, SOHU and the rest of the China gang weren’t doing much of anything and actually seemed to be losing momentum. I thought about doubling up, but this 100 share position already represented 30% of TIM assets – already exceeding the percent I wanted because I promised myself to set a good example for everyone watching (so much for that!).

Luckily, within a few more minutes, BIDU and SOHU both went negative on the day and everyone seemed to realize that the Alibaba hype miht wear off rather quickly. BIDU suddenly tanked $10 within a few minutes and GSOL followed suit, dropping down to $36.60. I thought about taking easy profits of $1/share, but it’d only be $85 after commissions. I decided to wait and hold, but after another quick drop to $36, I bought to cover, glad to take my $1.67/share in profits in 30 minutes. The price was in freefall so I actually bought to cover at $35.83, a nice $184 gain, and $170 after commissions. Not bad. good start to TIM.

GSOL gradually trended lower throughout the day and I felt somewhat guilty about covering too early, not only because of the $100 or so mor eI would’ve made, but because if I held overnight, it wouldn’t be counted as a day trader and as it is now, I can only do 2 more day trades in the next 5 trading sessions (since I’m below the $25,000 deemed to be necessary to trade so speculatively so often).

Gotta get over $25k so I can start trading the way I like! Holding CYGT I think will help me get there quicker than these $100-$300/ daily gainers.

(just signed up for Covestor so all my trades will be verified)

Been waiting for 7 minutes so far for a response from a ToS rep for online chat. At this rate the market will be open before I even know if there are any to short…

  • Reaper

I was just told by Ross at ToS that they are short-handed at the trade desk this morning. I started chatting with him at 8:21 and he just put in my short order.

  • PCola

Got mine in now too. I thikn I had to reverse jinx it with my post above :D

  • notesguy88

    Hey Reaper,

When you reserve shares at TOS do you specify the price? Or do you short at the closing price? Thanks!

  • Reaper

notesguy — I always have them put in an order at a price very much above the closing price. I monitor the stock price during the day and if there is a spike I often raise the price. For example, I put an order in for MKTY today at $6.20.

As Tim has said, you can also have them just make a note in your account that the shares are reserved to short, but then it takes longer to put in the actual order.

  • http://www.test.timothysykes.com timothysykes

i have my order for MKTY at $6.99, i dont want any accidental executions!

  • PCola

I got mine in at $8. Not taking any chances :) If you have the buying power, there’s no real downside.

  • notesguy88

Thanks Reaper and Tim! That helps me to understand what you guys are doing. I can’t short anything yet since I’m still in the process of funding my TOS account and that’s gonna take a bit of time.

I’m also going to be ordering Tim’s DVDs shortly. Can’t wait to get started!!

  • bestdeception

Wow, you guys really think MKTY is going to get that high before it drops off a cliff??

  • preisendanz

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, let’s go long on the spike and short it when this thing comes back to earth.

  • lamecoder

They put the orders so high because the probability of it actually getting there is just about zero.

  • PCola

bestdeception, no, I don’t think it will, but I’d rather have it at $8 and drop it down to $4.90 if it can’t stay above $5 than put it in at $5.50 and watch it run to $6.50 and have an order execute that I didn’t want to place.

  • arcus

I here ya notesguy. I’m trying to get my Ameritrade account back up. They won’t let me short until I get the account to 2K again. So many good shorts lately. ugh…I need a log play. :)

  • YoungGunz

I got shares for mkty right after the alert. just put in my short order for $7 and forgot to tell them i had some reserved and said there were none before I could add that i have some reserved from earlier…Also got scared because I typed in MXTY instead of MKTY in the title. Luckily I spelled it right the first time when i asked to reserve :)

So are you going to jump on the spike after it loses steam if it cracks $5 or will you also jump in if there’s a sell off early?

  • notesguy88

    Hey arcus,

I have ameritrade too but it’s not a margin account. I opened a TOS account and I’m in the process of moving funds from Ameritrade to it. I like the fact that TOS has the online chat feature that I can use to reserve shares to short. I don’t think I can do that with Ameritrade.

  • YoungGunz

My account dipped to 1,999.99 with fees. I should have help zyxi 30mins more and I would have made easy money on my first timalert trade. I got chicken when it wouldn’t die around 3.00-3.10 so I thought I better cut and run. Better safe then sorry.

  • YoungGunz

ToS still let me short today though :)

  • YoungGunz

this may be a newbie question but in the lvl 2 monitoring doesn’t it show a bunch of sell requests from everyone putting their bookmarking order so high? I don’t see any of them in ToS’s level to monitor but there’s sucks

  • PCola

YoungGunz, you will see the lowest ask from a particular MM. For example, say ToS uses NITE to route their orders. And say someone else using NITE has an order to sell at $4.90. You will only see the $4.90 until that seller goes away or his order is filled. Then NITE moves to the next lowest order and displays that.

  • YoungGunz

Looks like it is struggling to stay above 5 early on. hopefully we see a nice spike today to short into. Its creeping back to 5 again after a shallow dip.

  • YoungGunz

whoa big seller taken out with 14100 shares

  • PCola

For those without a calculator, that’s about $700,000 worth of buying. Methinks a spike is coming…

  • Reaper

PCola — that is about $70k worth of buying. Recheck your math.

  • lamecoder

    I think you mean 70K

  • YoungGunz

Looks like it broke the $5 resistance now at 5.50. I may creep my order up from 7 to 8 or 9 if it starts tempting $6.

  • http://www.test.timothysykes.com timothysykes

haha reaper, u beat me to it….anyway, if i had the buying power and free trade,s taht woulda been me buying that $70k, flipping it for $5k profit in 5 minutes, fuck the SEC!

  • PCola

LOL. I thought it said 141,000. I hate when people don’t use commas :P

    Sorry guys.

  • AdamN

in short at $5.11 700 shares

  • YoungGunz

damn that sucker tanked fast. I knew I should have pulled it when i saw it get to 5.30. locked in at 4.97. keeping fingers crossed.

  • PCola

Adam, I think you’re in too early. I think it will spike/squueze one more time. I think we see higher than $5.50 at some point today, but I could be wrong.

  • AdamN

Looks like Tim and I had the same idea. Starting to tank now.

  • Davey

short 900 MKTY at 5.05…missed my complete …hopefully this goes negative

  • PCola

guess I was wrong, as usual :)

Hope it keeps dropping for thos in it.

  • http://www.test.timothysykes.com timothysykes

once the momo wears off, it can really tank…see my latest alert:

    http://www.timalerts.com/2008/07/23/shorted-mkty-at-540-perfect-perfect-pump-and-dump-price-action/

  • YoungGunz

I think we need to get an instant messenger list going for TimAlerts. These suckers just move too fast. I know I fucked up this timing but when I saw it at 5.40 and when i got the tim alert it was like 1.5-2min difference.

Looks like there are atleast 2 buyers asking for 3,000 and 3,100 shares at 4.53 and 4.55.

  • http://www.watchfrogbiz.com watchfrog

Mmade a quick C-note on DTG. Should have waited another 5 seconds…would have doubled?!!!

  • TraderT

So I have a quick question. So lets say I do reserve shares at a price that is way above what I think its going to reach. If I don’t go back and reedit the order to match whatever price I want to short it at, would the order simply get erased for the day? or would I have to personally bring up the chat window to cancel?
